Just turn left if coming from the south or right if coming from the north at the Caltex Service Station on the corner of Avenal and Dee Streets. From the airport travel to the roundabout at Bond Street, take the free turn right and continue along Bond Street and Bill Richardson Drive to Fox Street. Turn right over the railway line, left into Philip Street and right into Avenal Street.

Invercargill is the ideal place for a family holiday. There are many free and affordable things to do in the city.

Motor bike enthusiasts can visit the displays at E Hayes and Sons Ltd, the home of the The World's Fastest Indian. Significant others can spend the time visiting the extensive gift and homeware store next door.

Take a walk to Queens Park where the children can play in the playground castle, buy an ice-cream at the Cheeky Llama Cafe, feed the ducks from the historic bridge, visit the animals and walk amongst the birds in the covered aviary.

Pack a picnic and walk to the Otepuni Gardens in the city centre.

Visit the distinctive pyramid shaped Southland Museum and Art Gallery to view the prehistoric tuatara and their babies, a unique Roaring 40s Gallery featuring the Sub-Antarctic Islands, and the Burt Munro exhibit.

From the car park at the Stead Street Wharf walk along the estuary gravel track and boardwalk for panoramic views of the lagoon and estuary. The track has interpretation panels, seating and a shelter. Along the way, take a look at the remains of the historic railway trestle bridge from the lagoon beach lookout. Spend some time at the historic Stead Street Wharf with its replica Lady Barkly steam train and replica fishing cutter.

Drive onto Oreti Beach where the children can paddle in the sea, collect shells, build old fashioned sand castles and play beach cricket with Mum and Dad.

Attending a wedding reception in Avenal?

There are a range of units to suit your family and friends from 2-bedroom motel units (sleep up to 6) to studios for 2. We are a 2-minute walk from the Elmwood Function Centre in Invercargill and just across the street from Buster Crabb.

Only a 5-minute drive to Malahide Gardens and 20-minute drive to The Hideaway, both very popular wedding venues in Invercargill. The Cabbage Tree is a unique restaurant and function centre with 3 private fully equipped conference rooms. This is another very popular wedding venue and is only a 15-minute drive from the motel. They also provide door to door courtesy vans for your safety and convenience.


Invercargill has a vast variety of ethnic and European restaurants.

Just across the street is Buster Crabb's fine dining restaurant specialising in steak and the best Southland has to offer. If you prefer, you can get the courtesy van from the motel out to Otatara and dine at Ziff's cafe and bar. There you can order a light snack or a full a la carte meal with a matching wine from their extensive wine list.

Closer to the motel is the family Cobb & Co restaurant and Da Vincis Pizza restaurant both only a 2-minute walk away. A 5-minute courtesy van drive away is Paddington Arms, a restaurant that specialises in English pub food. Their homemade gravy is heavenly. The Windsor Shopping Centre has a variety of exclusive restaurants and is only 5-minute drive from the motel. Sample everything from seafood to steaks and sandwiches and cakes in relaxing surroundings. Or drive into the CBD and sample some of the many restaurants that are there.
